We are fortunate to be able to share this brilliant recording by Mick Flinn and his band ahead of Movember...
The Mick Flynn Band - Curl a Mo
The story behind this song starts back in Melbourne Australia in 1970. At the time, Mick Flinn was the lead singer/bass player of the pop group, The Mixtures. Although sceptical, Mick visited a clairvoyant by the name of Stevo for a reading and she quickly picked up strong feelings for bicycles. Unbeknown to her, Mick had recently been in the studio recording a song called The Pushbike Song. Stevo predicted that the song would be a huge success and told him he would travel to England and it would change his life.
We now know that was exactly the case and the Pushbike Song went on to become a No.1 in many territories worldwide. Stevo also told Mick, "You must write a song called ‘Curl A Mo’, it will be very successful". Not understanding what Curl a Mo meant, she explained to Mick that years ago, men grew large handlebar (excuse the pun) moustaches that they would wax & curl and that twirling them meant everything would be alright.20 years later, Mick – who had already raised hundreds of thousands for the
20 years later, Mick – who had already raised hundreds of thousands for the Teenage Cancer Trust – was asked if he would become involved in spreading the word about the importance of PSA testing. Later, the Chairman of the FOPS (Friends of Prostate Sufferers) asked Mick if he had heard of the (then lesser known in the UK) Australian Prostate Charity who encouraged men to ‘grow a Mo’ during the month of November: they called the campaign ‘Movember’. As instantly as Mick remembered Stevo’s words from 44 years hence, the lyrics and melody for the song flowed and ‘Curl a Mo’ (for Movember) was born. Mick sent a demo of the song to the Movember campaign who agreed it was totally awesome. They asked if they could help him release the song to get the message within out to people worldwide.
Mick’s good friend and seasoned record producer Andy Wright (Simply Red, Eurythmics, Natalie Imbruglia) agreed to produce Mick’s record with his band, the Mick Flinn Band and now that song, ‘Curl a Mo’ is now available for worldwide download through iTunes, Amazon and all other download sites during the month of November 2016.
All proceeds from the sales and downloads of the record will go to the Movember campaign…
…suffice to say Mick is less of a clairvoyant sceptic today than he used to be!
The FOPS greatest accomplishment is that, working together, we have helped, and will keep on helping, men affected by Prostate Cancer (also known as 'Tiger Cancer') turn themselves away from their personal precipices and get their lives back together. Learn more...
